yet, folks are always wanting us to lead harry reid. look, we've tried 60 ways to sundown and, you know, i don't know what they got going on over at the senate, but i wish they would get together with the president, pass what they think they can pass, and then we would be glad to take a look at it. we've certainly shown -- >> you know as well as i do they're not going to be able to pass anything with 60 votes. they may be able to pass some things with 50, 52, 53 votes. they won't be able to pass anything with 60 votes, and should that be the marker on something like this? is this such an important -- >> for sure. >> -- thing it should take 60? that 41 -- >> no. i'm saying what should be the marker is the senate ought to be able to pass something. look, for better or for worse, the president -- >> so senate republicans need to get involved in this? >> no, what i'm saying is they need to work it out over there. i'm not going to tell the senate how to do their business, but they -- where br they start looking for us to lead them we've pass

harry reid had a chance to go for a more full-throated filibuster. but his reasoning was that when the democrats are in the majority -- in the minority and that could happen, this next election, that they want to have that same leverage that republicans have been using with this filibuster reform to block many of the president's actions. but this is a real surprise that hagel has essentially been filibusterd. it looks like ult mimately, he will be confirmed. they have been pretty successful in forcing the president's hand to release more information on that. but, ultimately, i think they are giving away some of their standing. they're supposed to be the party of national security, the party of defense in this way by blocking this very important post. i think they're doing some damage -- >> yeah, we're talking about secretary of defense. we're talking about who's going to head the pentagon. and let me tell you this, ryan, tell you how blatantly inconsistent and unprecedented this is. he said in 2005 that presidential nominees shouldn't be filibustered

so harry reid is frustrated. >> mr. president, in less than two hours our country will be without a secretary of defense at a time when we have a war going on in afghanistan, and about 70,000 troops there. we have a nuclear weapon was detonated in north korea. >> reporter: a nuclear test was done in north korea and 66,000 troops in afghanistan but you get the picture. these are serious times and so harry reid and the democrats say, we need a secretary of defense and soon, jon. jenna: point well-taken there. what are republicans saying about the nomination? what are they telling you and what about this delay, this potential delay? >> reporter: well, jenna, several leading republicans tell me they think chuck hagel will ultimately get through based on the strength of democratic support. they're holding out because they want more information what the president president did the night of the benghazi attack, 9/11. they want that information. they want the texts of speeches for chuck hague gill five years. they feel like the

that left harry reid with just 59 of the 60 votes needed to move on to confirmation marking the first ever successful filibuster of a cabinet nominee. because of the coming senate recess, the next chance to confirm hagel will be the last week of february. in the meantime, republicans continued to find new reasons to justify they are obstruction. senator john mccain's latest gripe is personal. >> there's a lot of ill will towards senator hagel because when he was republican, he attacked president bush mercilessly. at one point said he was the worst president since herbert hoover, said that the surge was the worst blunder since the vietnam war, which is nonsense. and was very amti his own party and his own people. people don't forget that. >> people also don't forget that years after hagel's republican herecy, john mccane said this of the man in 2006. i would be honored to have chuck with me in any capacity. he'd make a great secretary of state. people have also not forgotten that this filibuster has nothing to do with chuck hagel and everything to do with a republican vendetta against

some republicans were upset that harry reid said he wasn't going to honor a hold. what you're seeing here from republicans is a play to make sure that they flex a little muscle so that the democrats understand that the president's agenda has to go through them and that's on guns, on immigration. i agree with david. i think this will get done but it's never great for a nominee to have to wait another week to hang out there and take shots from opposition. it's not a great place for them to be but i'm not worried that this is not going to get through but this is the flexing of the muscle by republicans in the senate for sure. >> okay. so hagel gets blocked at least for now. rand paul and others are threatening to block john brennan. susan rice didn't get to the nomination process. is this rocky road if that's how we want to describe it, david, does this hurt the president's credibility or at least his ability to get things done, a small distraction, should it become a smaller one? put it into the wider con tech in terms of what the white house want to be accomplishing
